JANUARY'S SPOTLIGHT IS ON DEVOPS ENGINEER: CARL ANDERSSON
Carl actually began his career working at Componenta, a company which manufactures metal components of machinery/vehicles. Although this was interesting initially, Carl quickly sensed a monotony, and realized that this was not his calling in life (perhaps this is where the curiosity for Automation began?! 😂)
Because he had always been interested in technology/computers, in 2018 he decided to attend University West to study Network Technology and IT Security. Straight away, he realised that this was a much better fit for him.
Carl notes that the education was a good mix between "General IT" (Server Operations & Windows management) and working with Command line tools, Linux & pure network technology: Cisco hardware, subnet, network protocols, switching and routing, firewalls etc.
Upon completing his studies in 2020, Carl applied to a variety of different companies in Gothenburg and one of the first to get back to him was Xenit AB.
When Carl joined in August 2020, he joined as a Support Technician in the Service Desk. He was able work with a lot of different technologies in a more practical sense than ever before - such as Citrix, Microsoft 365 and Azure. Azure caught his attention right away and he became deeply interested in the world of Cloud ☁️
Carl soon took certifications: AZ-900 Fundamentals and the AZ-104 Azure Administrator Certification.
After some exposure to the DevOps team, he became curious about that type of work, and was later asked if he'd like to become a "junior" DevOps member; working with some of the less complex tasks, in order to aid the team.
He began learning Terraform, had an intro to Kubernetes, looked more into Azure, AND switched the OS from Windows to Linux on his laptop (because that's what all the cools guys were using 😎).
At first, Carl was working both for the DevOps team, and for Service Desk in a 3-1 week split. But once he had taken more DevOps oriented certificates (AZ-400, Hashicorp: Terraform Associate etc.) he was promoted to full time DevOps Engineer.
Nowadays, Carl is primarily working with Xenit's own Kubernetes service (XKS) - Managing daily operations & supporting customers, as well as working with R&D and technical implementation.
Carl's plans for the future are to stay close to the technology and to keep developing his skillset.
We're proud of your journey so far, Carl, and can't wait to see what else you bring to the table as you progress! 💪🏻
